Reverence is a form of worship.
Heb 12:28-29 says "Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire."
Reverence is treating someone or something with deep respect. We show deep respect for God because there is nothing greater than God.
When we reverence God He gives us so much in return, because it creates in us an openness for the Holy Spirit to help us.
When we have an attitude of deep respect towards God, after a while it becomes easier and easier to love Him and to see things as He sees them. Our faith becomes stronger. Hope is some how easier. We grow closer to God and grow in holiness. There is power behind a simple act of respect - towards God and what is sacred.
Most of us understand about reverencing God, but we sometimes forget to reverence and respect what represents God. Part of showing deep respect is to also reverence our Chapel, the altar, the stained glass, the pews. The Chapel is the heart of the school and the place where we communicate to God that we reverence and worship Him. It’s God’s house. He is there in the tabernacle. Yes God is everywhere, but He is also present in a special way in our Chapel because He is truly present in the Eucharist.
When Mass is not happening in the Chapel it is set aside as a place of prayer. It’s not an extra rehearsal space. It’s not a lounge. We try to keep an atmosphere of silence and reverence in chapel. We talk outside of chapel or quietly if it just can’t wait. There is so little time in our day to truly focus on God. Take advantage of the chapel time to pray and talk with God. Show reverence by how you act in Chapel.
Because just like friendships deepen and grow over time, it’s the same with God.
Showing reverence is one way to communicate to God that He’s important to you and that you care.
We ask Mary to intercede for us and help us to show reverence as we pray: Hail Mary…
O Mary whose Name is Holy… Pray for us.
